Roofing materials
Roofing is an integral part of any building, the reliability of which will determine the safety of the entire building. Before purchasing any roofing material, it is necessary to have a clear idea of what criteria must match the modern roofing material. The basic characteristics of any roofing material are water resistance, durability, tensile strength, puncture resistance, resistance to changes in temperature, chemical reagents, and ease of installation.
The presence of these characteristics, expressed in specific terms, determines the cost of material on the market. Currently, the roofing materials market presents a wide range of different products, allowing the choice of the best option in terms of both price and quality for practically any structure.
Not surprisingly, polymeric membrane roofs, having the best value for the money, are becoming more popular in today's construction market.
The elasticity and strength of these membranes, provide ease of installation and long-life operation, compensating the financial cost.

Fully adhered roofing system
This lightweight roofing system is applied on roofs with irregular configuration, as well as on roofs which are exposed to high wind loads and have a large slope (>10%).
This adhesive system is also widely used on roofs where, due to the limited carrying capacity of the roof, ballasting is impossible.
In this system, the membrane sheets are fully glued directly to the base with a special mounting adhesive. Monolithic reinforced concrete, insulation, cement-sand screed, flat slate, steel, extruded polystyrene and even the old roof structure can be used as a base.
Advantages of the system:
- Can be applied on roofs with any incline and configuration
- Low wind-resistance of the system
- Light weight system
- Application on buildings of any height
- High aesthetic properties
Mechanically attached roofing system
This system is used on roofs where ballasts cannot be used (sloping roofs, light framework, the absence of parapets on the roof).
Blades of the membrane are attached with special fasteners to the base of roof. The blades are connected to each other by means of adhesive suture strips (EPDM membrane) or special equipment for heat sealing (TPO membrane and PVC). As insulation used non-flammable mineral wool, pinned to the ground.
Advantages of the system:
- Minimum weight of the system
- Possibility of application on roofs with any incline and configuration
- Optimal system for roofs with a limited load capacity
- Possibility of installation in cold temperatures
- High speed of the installation
Ballast roofing system
The most economical and easily installed system.
Used on roofs with a slope of up to 10%.
The membrane is freely placed on the base of the roof and secured only on the perimeter and in junctions.
Ballast that can be used include river gravel 20-40 mm in size, crushed granite or concrete paving tiles.
Advantages of the system:
- Minimum quantity of seams
- High speed of installation
- Possibility of installation in cold temperatures
- Low installation cost
Inversion Roofing System
Construction of the inversion (inverted) roof, when the thermal insulation layer is placed on top of the waterproof layer, makes it possible to avoid the influence of most of the negative effects and provide longer service life of waterproofing materials and increase the reliability of the roof.
Advantages of the system:
- Increased protection of the membranes during construction and operation

Rolled bituminous materials
Rolled bituminous and bituminous-polymeric materials are building materials for Interior and exterior waterproofing of various buildings and structures.
They can be used for protection against moisture on :
- flat and pitched roofs (are stacked in multiple layers) the top layer should be coated,
- foundations, floors, the walls of underground premises - they are melted or are fixed on mastic,
- pools, reservoirs, canals,
- bridges, viaducts, roads, tunnels.
Depending on the production technology, they are distinguished by:
Substrate material - are made by impregnating basis (cardboard, asbestos, fiberglass fabric, glass-fiber-reinforced canvas-like fabric) by bitumen, by tars or by their mixtures, and for certain coatings - with the addition of polymeric modifiers.
Baseless - prepared by applying rolling mixtures composed of bitumen, a filler and additives (softener, antiseptic).
Reinforced or not reinforced.
Bituminous and bituminous-polymeric roofing materials
Roll roofing for waterproofing has been sufficiently used for a long time, with the most common roofing material being tar paper. Its advantage is the low price, but its service life is no more than 5-7 years, since it is heavily exposed to atmospheric influences: it becomes fragile at low temperatures and fluid with high temperatures. The development of various modifiers, which are added to the bitumen, eliminated these flaws. Thus, bituminous-polymeric materials appearing on the market are characterized by:
- the prolonged period of service - from 15 to 30 years,
- by 100% airtightness,
- abrasion resistance and immunity to temperature extremes,
- resistance to decay,
- a wide range of different bases, thickness, and coverage, allowing you to choose the best options based of the specific conditions and budget.
Roofing waterproofing materials are divided into uncoated and covered. The first obtained by the impregnation of basis and use as the underlining layer. The second - by applying on the base on both sides of the protective layers of mineral chips flouring (granules, slate, the vermiculite, which can be painted in the different colors), the foil, the polymeric fusible film. Stone powder protects bitumen from sunlight and mechanical damage.
Depending on the characteristics and prices of rolled roofing materials, they can be categorized as: Premium, Business, Standard, or Economy. Laying a soft roof is chosen based on the type of coating and its properties. It can be:
- Fusion - the material is heated to a temperature of 80 C, is softened, and becomes sticky and easy to fit to the surface. It is used for flat roofs.
- Paint-Roller coating is laid on the adhesive layer. Suitable for all types of flat and pitched roofs.
- Mechanical fastening - soft roofing is fixed using nails or Staples, most frequently is used as a helper method for pitched roofs.
Among the most modern and high quality bitumen-polymeric materials include:
- Icopal
- Icopal Solo
- Icopal Ultra
- Technonicol
- Technoelast
- Unifleks
EPDM Polymer membranes
EPDM Membrane is produced in the United States from a synthetic rubber base and is the optimal roofing solution for countries with a cold climate. Due to its excellent physical-mechanical properties, the projected service life of the EPDM membrane is at least 50 years.
EPDM membrane is easy installed using conventional hand tools which reduce labor costs and turnaround time.
EPDM membrane is delivered in rolls 30.5 meters in length and from 3 to 15 meters in width, allowing you to keep the number of joints to a minimum for reliable and fast waterproofing of the roof. In order to save the customer’s time and money, the membrane can be installed over top of the old roof coating.
With high elasticity and resistance to deformation (coefficient of deformation - 450%), EPDM membrane is ideal for roofs with complex configurations and large quantities of protruding elements. A wide range of original spare parts guarantee the processing units and parts of any shape and complexity. Currently, rolls of EPDM are produced with taped seams from the factory. This not only helps to minimize labor costs by half compared with the usual method, but also reduces the risk of human error when connecting seams.
Thanks to the resistance of EPDM membrane to temperature conditions (ranging from +150 to -60 Celsius) and the effects of solar radiation and ozone, installing EPDM membrane is possible all year round. This enables customers to easily plan the timing of construction and commissioning.
Depending on the architectural features and performance characteristics of the roof, the requirements and financial possibilities of the customer, as well as other factors, EPDM membrane is used in the ballast, stripping, mechanical and adhesive roofing systems. It is available in several versions: ballast, mechanical, adhesive and inversion. Each system has its own features, advantages and spheres of application, but they all in combine with EPDM membrane to ensure durable and reliable roof waterproofing.
For nearly half a century, Carlisle products have been a leading presence in the global construction market and have earned indisputable recognition. Roofing materials from this manufacturer are considered one of the most reliable and practical operation and easy installation. The “Сarlisle Syntec Systems” company professionally deals with the supply and installation of roofing systems on objects of any complexity in any region of the Ukraine.
Thermoplastic Polyolefin Membrane
Thermoplastic Polyolefin membrane is the roofing of the new generation. It includes synthetic rubber and polypropylene, whose membrane has excellent physical-mechanical characteristics such as elasticity, durability, and resistance to puncture, tear, abrasion, UV radiation and ozone. The first roofing polymers were created at the end of the last century in the United States and were not intended for construction. They were to be used in the production of automobiles and light industry. Carlisle Corporation is a world leader in the production and delivery of polymeric membranes. Today it is an excellent replacement to bituminous coating.
TPO membrane's canvases are joined together using special equipment for hot air welding. TPO membrane is supplied in rolls of 30 meters in length and a width of up to 3.6 meters, allowing you to quickly and efficiently perform roof installation. The standard membrane is white with splendid indices on light-reflection and heat absorption, resulting in substantial savings in energy consumption in the building. In addition, at the request of the customer, TPO membrane can be supplied in other color solutions as well. Thanks to the wide range of working temperatures, roofing TPO membrane adapts in all regions of the terrestrial globe, does not depend on specific climatic conditions and can be installed at any time of the year.
This modern roofing material has high elasticity and excellent strength. The high content of propylene gives it an excellent chemical resistance. In comparison to PVC membranes, materials of this type are safer from the ecological point of view because it does not contain chlorine or chlorine-containing components. Coating roofs with TPO membrane, whose price is a little higher than bituminous materials, is always economically justified. This is due to the savings on the cost of installation (the material is placed in 1 layer) and extremely long life (not less than 50 years).
The TPO membrane will be ideal for roof construction of any technological complexity. To purchase it for the best price available, please contact the “Сarlisle Syntec Systems” company.
PVC membrane
The human desire for a comfortable and safe life is the engine of progress in many areas, for example, in the development and improvement of construction materials and products in order to make a variety of more reliable and durable structures. For many decades, a choice popular with builders was using a rolled material intended for arrangement of roofs-roofing PVC membrane. It is used on new and renovated roofs of any configuration and complexity.
PVC membrane is a material for waterproofing that is based on plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is composed of plasticizers and reinforcing mesh polyester that gives it flexibility, and strength.
Half a century ago in Europe, this product as a roof covering only appeared on the construction market, and today it has absolute leadership among all similar products. Such widespread use has been made possible thanks to a number of undeniable advantages to metals or polyvinyl chloride tiles:
- improved fire-resistance rating and the absence of harmful substances of combustion, which means it’s safer for humans in case of smoke;
- aesthetic appearance/exterior view
- high resistance to mechanical damages, punctures, cuts and stretching;
- high tensile strength at low temperatures
- simplicity/ease of installation
